Michael Latzer

Michael Latzer is an Austrian communication scientist .

Latzer obtained a Mag. Rer in 1984. soc. oec ( MSc ) in business computer science and in 1990 a PhD in political science at the University of Vienna , where he in 1997 media economics and - policy (Communication Studies ) habilitation . From 1998 to 2004 he was deputy director of the Research Center for Institutional Change and European Integration (IWE) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . From 2004 to 2008 he was a senior researcher at the Institute for Technology Assessment at the same academy.

Since 2008 Michael Latzer has been Professor of Communication Studies and Head of Department for “Media Change and Innovation” at the Institute for Mass Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich (IPMZ). His main research areas include: Internet economics , algorithm studies , innovation research , media convergence , media governance , telecommunications and technology assessment .

Latzer has researched and taught at renowned institutions in Austria, USA, Japan and France. In Switzerland he leads a. a. regularly conduct representative surveys on the impact and use of the Internet in an international comparison.
