Laudario di Cortona

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Laudario di Cortona is a manuscript from the second half of the 13th century with a collection of Lauden , popular sacred hymns of praise. There are different views on dating. It consists of 171 sheets of parchment . Of the 47 lauden included, only 46 have text and notes (in square notation ). Number 5 contains only text. It is Manuscript No. 91 of the Franciscan Brotherhood of Santa Maria della Laude.

Background of the creation

The works contained in the Laudario di Cortona date back to the time of Francis of Assisi . At the beginning of the 13th century he preached the gospel in the language of the people. This is how the lauden came about. Most of these were handed down without notes. The pieces collected under Brother Elias, a successor to Francis, in Cortona , Tuscany, were an exception .

Fund and meaning

The collection of songs was found in the church of San Francesco in Cortona in 1876, around 600 years after it was first created. Today it is preserved in the library of Cortona. The Laudario di Cortona as well as the Laudario Magliabechiano 18 in Florence are the only original manuscripts of that era that contain not only the lyrics but also sheet music. Other important manuscripts contain only texts: the Laudario Magliabechiano 19, Laudario di Arezzo or the Laudario di Milano.

Pieces from the Laudario have often been recorded on phonograms. There are recordings by the Ensemble Micrologus , the Munich Ensemble for Early Music, the Ensemble Organum and the Ars Choralis Coeln.
