Running club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A running club is a loose association of recreational runners . Long-distance running is mostly used .

“A very simple concept: Without registration, without club membership and free of charge, you can take part in the once or twice weekly running meetings at any time. Newbies and beginners are specially instructed by the running meeting leaders. The different running groups then complete a different program depending on the performance level of the participants. The only obligation: everyone, including beginners, is on the road for an hour - whether in a slow or fast group, with or without walking breaks. "

Historical development

The running clubs developed from the general running and jogging movement of the 1960s and the exercise movement (1970 to 1974).

The first running clubs were founded in 1974, including in Dortmund, Solingen and Darmstadt.

Character of a running club

The participants in a running group rarely practice long-distance running as a competitive sport . They are predominantly amateur athletes who run for physical and mental balance. The meetings are often held weekly. They are not only used for training , but also for socializing and exchanging experiences, so the participants run together in one or more groups. Competitive ambitions ("overtaking") during a running meeting are generally frowned upon.

Despite the leisure character, the participants of many running clubs take part in running competitions. However, they usually neither have the capability nor the ambition to achieve top positions. Often they register as a team for a run and travel together to the competition. Some running clubs express their togetherness with uniform jerseys .

organization structure

Running clubs can be affiliated with sports clubs . However, apart from changing rooms, there is no need for any sports facilities . Therefore the connection to an association is not necessary.
