Laura Esquivel Valdés (born September 30, 1950 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican author .

She became famous for her novel "Como agua para chocolate" (1989), which was translated into 33 languages ​​and also made into a film . The film was shot in Mexico in 1992 by her husband Alfonso Arau .

Laura Esquivel was originally a teacher, is the founder of a workshop for children's theater and literature and a “ Centro de Invención Permanente ” (“Center of Enduring Invention”) for children. She worked for television and for cinema before devoting herself to literature.

Her latest novel Malinche describes the life of one of the most colorful women in Mexican history. Malinche was the interpreter of the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés . With their help, Cortés managed to come to an understanding with his enemies, the Aztecs , as well as with his friends in Mesoamerica .

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
