Laura Gallego García [ laʊɾa gaʎeɰo gaɾθia ] (* 11. October 1977 in Quart de Poblet , Valencia ) is a Spanish children's author .

Life

Gallego García wrote her first book at the age of eleven with a friend, a 300-page work entitled Zodíaccía, un mundo diferente ( Spanish for "Zodiakia, another world"), in which a girl finds a magical island where everything is related to the zodiac signs of the horoscope. Although the story was never published by a publisher (Gallego García later published it himself on her website), she knew even then that she wanted to become a writer.

In 1997 she founded the philological university magazine Náyade while studying Hispanic Studies and was its co-director until 2000.

At the age of 21, also during her studies, she wrote the novel Finis Mundi ( Latin for "The End of the World"), with which she won first prize in the Barco de Vaport competition organized by the Spanish youth literature publisher Grupo SM and which was then published in 1999. By this time Gallego García had already written 14 unpublished books and had taken part in this competition several times without success.

Gallego García became known with the cycle Crónicas de la Torre ("Chronicles of the Tower"), consisting of the works El Valle de los Lobos ("The Valley of the Wolves"), La Maldición del Maestro ("The Master's Curse"), La llamada de los muertos ("The call of the dead") and Fenris, el elfo ("Fenris, the elf"). In 2004 she started her next big cycle, Memorias de Idhún ("Memories of Idhún", German title Geheime Welt Idhún ). Although Gallego García devotes herself mainly to children's and youth literature, she also writes books for adult readers, such as Retorno a la Isla Blanca (“Return to the White Island”) and El cartero de los sueños (“The Postman of Dreams”).

She is currently working on her dissertation on the courtly novel Belianís de Grecia by Jerónimo Fernández from 1579. Today she lives alone in Alboraya, a village near Valencia.

writing style

Gallego García covers a wide range of styles with her works: In addition to historical-fantastic novels such as Finis Mundi and her main work in the epic-fantastic area with Las Crónicas de la Torre and Memorias de Idhún, there are various children's books and with Las hijas de Tara ( “The Daughters of Tara”) even a detour into science fiction.

In her fantasy stories, feeling outweighs the fantastic elements. Your characters express feelings such as doubts, fears and feelings without ceasing, and let them guide you, unlike usual fantasy, in which ideas such as honor and duty are preferred. For example, the dialogues in the Memorias de Idhún are shaped by reflections by the main character Victoria on her contradicting affection for two opposing people.
