Laura Joh Rowland

Laura Joh Rowland (* 1954 in Michigan ) is an American crime novel writer with Chinese and Korean ancestry.

Life

Prior to becoming a writer, Rowland studied microbiology at the University of Michigan and worked as a graphic designer and lecturer in creative writing. Her novels are set in the 17th century during the Tokugawa era of feudal Japan . The protagonist of her seventeen novels so far (as of 2013) is the samurai and special investigator of the shogun Sano Ichirō .

Rowland lives in New Orleans with her husband . She names science fiction writer George Alec Effinger as her mentor.
