Laurel Aitken (actually Lorenzo Aitken , born April 22, 1927 in Cuba , † July 17, 2005 in Leicester , England ) was a singer and songwriter and is one of the founders of Jamaican ska music , along with Desmond Dekker .

Life

Laurel Aitken was born in Cuba in 1927. In 1938 he moved with his family to West Kingston (Jamaica), from there he moved to England in 1960 to help his career take off. Some of the classics of the genre such as Sally Brown or Skinhead Train come from his pen . He was known as the Godfather of Ska and is a musical idol of traditional skinheads .

Aitken continued to perform with various ska bands well into old age. He died on July 17, 2005 in Leicester, England, of complications from a heart attack.
