Laurence Engel (born September 17, 1966 in Paris ) is a French cultural manager. She has been President of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) since April 2016 .

Life

Laurence Engel attended the Lycée Charlemagne and the Lycée Henri-IV . She studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and the École normal supérieure de Fontenay-Saint-Cloud and received her doctorate in 1992 from the École nationale d'administration (ENA).

Engel began an administrative career at the Court of Auditors in 1997 with an administrative audit as an auditor, went to the television channels La Cinquième and Arte and worked at the Institut des hautes études sur la Justice (IHEJ). From 2000 she was a manager in the Ministry of Culture. In 2003 she went to the cultural administration of the Paris Commune under Mayor Bertrand Delanoë . Engel has published several political analyzes. She writes u. a. for Esprit magazine .

After the parliamentary elections in 2012 , she became the office manager (directrice de cabinet) of the Minister of Culture Aurélie Filippetti . Together with her, she resigned from office in 2014 and took over the role of Médiatrice du livre in September 2014. Her other offices are as President of the Board of Directors of the Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA).

Although she is neither a librarian nor a historian, she was appointed the first female president of the BnF in April 2016.

Engel is Aquilino Morelle's partner , they have three children. Morelle was advisor to President François Hollande from 2012 and had to resign in 2014 due to conflicts of interest.
