Live and act

Laurence Zitvogel completed her medical studies from 1987 to 1992 at the University of Paris V , where she did her doctorate in clinical oncology. From 1992 to 1995 she worked as a Junior Associate at the Cancer Research Institute of the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. From 1995 to 2003 she worked at the Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif near Paris , since 2003 as a professor. Since 2005 she has headed the tumor immunology and immunotherapy research group there . She also holds a professorship for immunology and biology at the Paris-South Universityinside. The importance of their work is reflected in over 450 publications and numerous awards. It has (as of July 2018) an h-index of 114.

She is married to the molecular biologist Guido Kroemer .

In her research, Zitvogel explores the question of how the immune system influences the development and treatment of cancer . She developed the concept of immunological cell death and was able to show that chemotherapy and radiation therapy as well as the inhibitors of certain enzymes can only develop a tumor-fighting effect through the immune system. Due to their discovery that intestinal bacteria promote the body's own immune reaction against cancer cells outside of the intestine, new treatment concepts in cancer therapy could be developed. In her current research, she is investigating the connection between the human microbiome and newly developed immunotherapies that support the body's own defense against cancer.
