Laurentius Chapel

The Protestant Laurentius Chapel is a listed church building in Nammen , a district of Porta Westfalica in the Minden-Lübbecke district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

A previous chapel had stood here since around 1350. The small half-timbered hall on a rubble stone base was built in 1523 after a dendrochronological study. It is the oldest half-timbered chapel in northwestern Germany. The choir is closed on three sides. The west gable protrudes, the lugs are profiled. The roof turret was probably put on in the 17th century. The building was renovated several times after fire damage at the end of the 17th century and in the 19th century. The bell was cast in 1654.

Before the Reformation, the chapel was a Catholic prayer house in which an image of Mother Mary was venerated. In 1654 the small bell, which was probably destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, was replaced by a larger one, which was baptized with the name Elisabeth. The bronze bell bears the inscription Friedrich Sak, servant Rittmeister formerly / itzo Churfürstlich Brandenburg Ambtmann zum Hausberge and Anna Catrina Corfy - married couple - read this bell to God's honor and the community to the best of Giesen and venerated the chapels to Nammen . The congregation has been using rooms in the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Haus for church services since 1969, and weddings are mainly celebrated in the chapel. A chapel association was founded in 1984 to preserve the building.

“Today it is primarily used as a“ wedding chapel ”and for special church services, for example always on the“ third ”holiday at Christmas, Easter and Whitsun. The vow that the forefathers took during an epidemic of the plague around 1450 will still be kept more than five centuries later. "
