List of apple varieties |
The Lavanttaler banana apple , also called mother apple or American mother , is a variety of apples that is said to have been imported from Massachusetts ( USA ) to the Carinthian Lavanttal around 1882 , from where it spread rapidly. The apple owes the second part of its name to its banana-like taste.
The growth of the tree is medium strong; the tree is undemanding in terms of soil and climate requirements; it can also be cultivated in frost-prone and rough locations. It is a table and economic apple that is not susceptible to scab and can bring rich yields.
The apple fruit is medium in size; the skin is green-yellow and colored orange to bright red on the sunny side. The pulp is yellowish white. The apple is ready for consumption between December and January. The taste is juicy, sweet, not very sour, very aromatic and spiced like a banana.
