The Lavochkin La-174TK ( Russian Лавочкин Ла-174ТК ) was one of several successive experimental prototypes of jet fighter aircraft made by the Soviet Design Bureau Lavochkin that were tested in the second half of the 1940s. The abbreviation TK stands for Tonkoje krylo (тонкое крыло), thin wing. It should not be confused with the La-174 , a later aircraft in the test series.

history

While Lavochkin was testing the 150 series La-150M / 152/154/156, which began in April 1947, with its unearthed laminar blades and RD-10 engines , the development office was given the order to find a suitable cell for the larger one and to develop the more powerful RD-500 engine, a replica of the British Rolls-Royce Derwent . In response, the La-174 was designed in parallel with the ongoing tests. She was to be equipped with swept wings , the testing of which with the La-160 was also in preparation. However, the construction of the test model was delayed. Since the engine was already ready for testing, it was decided to convert a La-152 to accommodate the RD-500. To do this, the front fuselage section was lengthened by adding an intermediate piece. Despite the fact that the La-160 had already successfully completed the swept wing tests, Lavochkin returned to the straight laminar profile. In order to still be able to achieve higher speeds, the wing cross-section was reduced as much as possible (hence the abbreviation TK).

In December 1947, two months after the first flight of the La-160, flight testing began, which was carried out by test pilots A. A. Popow and I. J. Fyodorow. It was quite disappointing, because despite the more powerful engine, only a top speed of 970 km / h could be achieved near the ground. In March 1948, the program was therefore terminated and Lavochkin turned to the test fighter equipped with arrow wings La-168 and La-174.
