The Lavochkin La-250 ( Russian Лавочкин Ла-250 ) was a Soviet experimental interceptor , which was nicknamed "Anaconda" (Анаконда). It was the final step in the series of experimental jet aircraft developed by Semyon Lavochkin after World War II, as the focus of the design office shifted to unmanned missiles after Lavochkin's death in 1960.

history

The first construction work began around the early 1950s and initially ran parallel to the La-200B . It was planned to use the La-250 as an all-weather heavy fighter with pure rocket armament for the supersonic range.

Andrei G. Kotschetkow made the first flight of this type on July 16, 1956. A total of four "anacondas" were created, which were subjected to extensive testing from 1956 to 1957. After an accident with a machine in July 1956, which was due to the pilot's insufficient visibility, the bow was pulled 6 ° downwards. All four machines were converted to this state of construction, also known as the La-250A, and the tests were resumed in 1957.

The aircraft was nicknamed "Anaconda" during testing - it referred to both the elongated fuselage shape and the comparatively critical flight characteristics of the machine. Since more powerful types were now available with the Jak-28P and the Tu-128 , the La-250 project was abandoned. The construction of a further development was canceled after Lavochkin's death.

A La-250 can be seen in the Central Museum of the Air Force of the Russian Federation .

technical description

The La-250 is a cantilevered middle decker in all-metal half-shell construction with delta wings. The air inlets for the two jet engines are attached on both sides of the long, narrow fuselage at the height of the pilot's cabin. The machine has a cantilever tail unit with a relatively large vertical fin. The horizontal stabilizer was designed as a pendulum rudder . The main landing gear with twin wheels in a conventional arrangement was completely retracted into the fuselage, which was the reason for the very narrow track width of the aircraft. A removable additional tank can be installed under the fuselage.
