Life
Lazlo Balogh, a Hungarian citizen, lived as a guest worker in the GDR. In 1972 he met Siglinde B., a citizen of the GDR, and became engaged to her. The couple decided to flee to West Germany together. After crossing the first fence, Siglinde B. stepped on a mine and was seriously injured. Lazlo Balogh helped her get over the second fence and then climbed it himself. He was shot in the process and died immediately.
Siglinde B. lost part of her right lower leg and was imprisoned until 1975 after she was released from hospital. In 1978 she was allowed to leave Germany.
