A framework story tells the story of two friends, the miners Jacques and Louis, who love the same woman. The woman accepts Louis' marriage proposal. A short time later there is a mine disaster. When the fire is out, another man is missing.

For Perret, who played the role of Louis himself, the film was the breakthrough as a director. One suggestion was the firedamp disaster in the Courrières mine in 1906. The film was restored in 2003 and is now in the French National Library.
