Le jardinier françois

Le jardinier françois is a book by the royal valet Nicolas de Bonnefons , first published in Paris in 1651. The full title was "Le jardinier françois qui enseigne à cultiver les arbres et herbes potagères, par RDCDWBDN". The author can only be deduced from the initials read backwards: Nicolas de Bonnefons walet de chambre du roi . The book deals in three chapters with the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, first with trees, then with other types of fruit and vegetables, and finally with the utilization and preservation of the fruit. It appeared at a time when, on the one hand, fruit and vegetable cultivation, at least as a sideline, was necessary for many people to eat, and on the other, wealthy citizens and nobles had representative kitchen gardens laid out. Comparable advisory literature on this subject was rare in France at the time, so that Bonnefons' work was a success and had numerous editions. It was only with Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinies " Instruction pour les jardins fruitiers et potagers " that a work appeared that exceeded Bonnefons and for which he is rated as a forerunner.

The book was translated into English by John Evelyn ; it was first published in German in 1665 by Georg Greflinger in Hamburg and in 1677 by Thomas Heinrich Hauenstein in Hanover. Greflinger edited the chapters individually and translated the titles as "Der Frantzösische Baum- und Stauden-Gärtner", "Der Frantzösische Kitchen-Gärtner" and "Der Frantzösische Confitirer".
