Leard State Forest

Leard State Forest is a wooded area in Maules Creek in New South Wales , Australia . A coal mine is to be set up in the area. To prevent this from happening, residents and environmental activists have been organizing protests since 2010.

Leard State Forest covers 8,000 acres of bushland between Narrabri and Boggabri in northwest New South Wales. The next settlement is the Farmer Community of Maules Creek. The area is home to the best preserved endangered box gum woodland on the Australian continent. 396 animal and plant species have been recorded in the forest area, 34 of which are protected species.

Protests against the coal mine

More than 250 people were arrested during non-violent acts of civil disobedience and blockades. Most residents show solidarity with the protests against the Maules Creek Coal Mine.

The protest is supported by The Wilderness Society, the Gomeroi People, Maules Creek Community Council, Lock the Gate, Greenpeace , 350.org and the Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales.
