Boggabri is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . The city lies between Gunnedah and Narrabri on the Namoi River . It belongs to the Local Government Area Narrabri Shire and the 2016 census found 856 residents.

Origin of name

The name Boggabri comes from the language of the local Aboriginal tribe, the Gamilaraay . The term bagaaybaraay literally means “has brooks” in German. The same word element can be found in the place name Boggabilla (on the border with Queensland , south of Goondiwindi ).

Public facilities

There are two primary schools in Boggabri, one state and one religious.

The city is also home to the John Prior Multi Purpose Health Service , a modern medical center named after one of Boggabri's most famous residents, Dr. John Prior , bearer of the Order of Australia , who worked in the city for over half a century.

Boggabri is on the Kamilaroi Highway (Australian Route 37), one of the major highways in New England. He connects Quirindi with Bourke .

The city's train station is on the North West Railway to Mungindi , 515 kilometers by train from Sydney . Opened in 1882, the station consists of a station building on the only platform, a through track and a small freight yard. A diesel-powered train is currently serving the station in each direction (9:47 a.m. to Sydney and 4:10 p.m. to Moree ).

Fishing in the Namoi River is popular with tourists.

The main tourist attraction, however, is Gin's Leap , a rocky cliff named after an Aboriginal girl who, according to legend, jumped down from there in the 17th or 18th century to escape a group of men.

Sports

In 1946 the rugby player Trevor Eather from Boggabri was selected for the Australian national rugby team.
