Quirindi is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is located in the Local Government Area Liverpool Plains Shire and had a population of 2,680 at the 2016 census. Quirindi is considered the gateway to the north-west of the state - due to its location on the Kamilaroi Highway , which leads via Gunnedah to Walgett , and its proximity to the New England Highway , which leads via Tamworth and Armidale to Tenterfield .
economy
The main industry is agriculture. Grains and oilseeds are grown in the black earth plains in the west, while livestock is raised in the hilly east of the district.
traffic
The city is on the Kamilaroi Highway (Australian Route 37), 15 km northwest of the junction with the New England Highway (National Route 15) in Willow Tree .
Quirindi Station is on the Main North Railway 392 km north of Sydney. It opened in 1877. A diesel railcar drives to Sydney and Armidale / Moree each day .

history
The Aboriginesstamm the Kamilaori lived in the area for many thousands of years. The name Quirindi is derived from their language and can have a number of different meanings, e.g. B. 'Nest in the hills', 'Place where fish breed', 'Place of many possums' or 'Dead tree on the mountain top'. Earlier spellings were Cuerindi and Kuwherindi .
The first post office was opened in Quirindi on January 1, 1858.
Sports
There are excellent opportunities to do sports in Quirindi. There are several sports fields for athletics, cricket, rugby, soccer, basketball and netball. There is also a horse racing stadium (nickname: "Randwick" of the North - Randwick is Sydney Racecourse), polo fields, rodeos and camp drafting, as well as a 9-hole golf course, two tennis clubs, three bowling courts and a shooting range and a water sports complex.
A motorcycle club is 3 miles northeast of Quirindi on Borah Creek Road . Their motocross course is 1.2 km long and in good condition.
