Bingara is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is located in Murchison County in New England , 158 km north of Tamworth , 70 km west of Inverell , 604 km north of Sydney and 500 km southwest of Brisbane . The city lies on the Gwydir River and is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Gwydir Shire, created in 2003 . At the 2016 census, Bingara had 1,074 residents. Most of the inhabitants are of Anglo-Celtic origin. 17.3% were born abroad and 5.1% are of Aboriginal descent. The city is a popular retirement home, so 43.1% of the population are 65 years or older. Their socio-economic standard is below the Australian average.

history

In 1827 Allan Cunningham crossed the Gwydir River at Bingara. At that time he thought the river was the Peel River , but realized his mistake on the return trip. In 1838 the Myall Creek massacre took place near what is now Bingara , killing 28 Aborigines.

The gold discoveries of 1852 led to the settlement of gold diggers. Copper and diamonds were also found in the 1880s, which led to the city's rapid development. Bingara is one of the few diamond deposits in Australia. In 1890 the previous name Bingera (the Aboriginal name for 'Bach') was changed to Bingara . The first post office Bingera opened on January 1, 1853, was renamed Upper Bingera in 1862 and closed again in 1868. The second post office, Bingera , opened in 1862 and was renamed Bingara in 1890 .

climate

In spring (September / October) and autumn (April / May) the climate in Bingara is very mild and pleasant. From June to August there are sunny days, but the nights are cold and frosty. The summer from November to January is hot and very dry.

Transport and tourism

The Fossickers Way (State Road 95) passes through the town and crosses where the Gwydir River. The Gwydir River is also the main attraction of Bingara.
