Coordinates: 29 ° 52 ' S , 150 ° 34' O Gwydir Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 9,259.7 km² and has about 5,000 inhabitants.
Gwydir is located on the northeast border of the state with Queensland about 580 km north of the metropolis Sydney and 500 km southeast of Brisbane . The area includes 68 hamlets and towns, including Bingara , Upper Bingara, Cobbadah, Coolatai, Crooble, Croppa Creek, Elcombe, Dinoga, Gineroi, Gravesend, Gulf Creek, Horton Valley, Gravesend, Mosquito Creek, North Star, Warialda , Warialda Rail and Yallaroi. The headquarters of the Shire Council is located in Bingara in the southern half of the LGA, where about 1,100 people live.

The Gwydir Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Gwydir is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
