Lebedev PTA-1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lebedev PTA-1 military aircraft ( Russian Лебедев ПТА-1 ) was a French Farman IV revised by Vladimir Lebedew for the Russian military , in which he had in particular the aspect of easy assembly and disassembly for land transport over long distances in mind.

The main external difference to the original model was an aerodynamic cladding of the pilot's seat. The machine was completed in 1911 and performed as well as the original model. Two PTA-1s were built for the Russian military, one of which received inflatable pontoons under the lower wing for emergency landings on the water.

The idea of an aircraft that was easy to dismantle was difficult to use in practice with this model. In particular, the assembly under field conditions took over two hours because of the many tension wires, and when dismantled the aircraft was too bulky for transport. The monoplane samples that appeared at the same time were significantly smaller and better suited to this concept.
