Carl Lebrecht Steinmüller (born July 6, 1838 in Gummersbach ; † January 12, 1899 there ) was a German engineer and co-founder of L. & C. Steinmüller GmbH.

Life

Lebrecht's father, the music teacher Peter Wilhelm Eberhard Steinmüller, married Wilhelmine Heuser, the daughter of an innkeeper from Gummersbach, in 1835. To supplement the scarce income, Lebrecht's mother opened a general store in addition to her husband's music store. Since the goods sold often got wet or the glued bags soaked to the annoyance of the customers, Lebrecht had the idea of producing waterproof paper with the help of a wax coating, and the Steinmüller paper factory was established in 1855 .

Lebrecht married Emma Emilie Louise Luyken (1840-1919) on October 6, 1864 and had 5 daughters with her. Her father, Friedrich Mathias Christian Luyken, owned a book and newspaper printing company in Gummersbach , which his son Carl Luyken , Lebrecht's brother-in-law, later took over.

In 1866 Lebrecht and his brother Carl Hugo (1840–1909) took over the paper mill from their father and enlarged it. The locomobile purchased in 1872 , which was actually supposed to be used to transport the paper to and from the next train station, proved to be susceptible to repair and useless. Lebrecht tried several times to get the machine ready to go and took it apart.

In 1873 Lebrecht accompanied his father-in-law to the world exhibition in Vienna to advise him on the purchase of a new steam boiler for the printing company. Since none of the mostly English boilers seemed suitable, Lebrecht decided to build his own boiler. The first Steinmüller boiler was born as early as 1874, and it was in operation until 1883 and in the Luyken print shop until 1923 .
