Ledvance headquarters in Garching

In April 2015 it was announced that Osram will spin off its lamp business for general lighting with a good third of the employees. In June 2015, the Osram Licht Supervisory Board approved the spin-off of a lamp division with products such as LED, halogen and energy-saving lamps from Osram GmbH. Ledvance has been a legally independent company since July 1, 2016. Lawrence Lin was named the company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in 2018. In the year of the spin-off, Ledvance generated around 40 percent of the Osram group turnover - the share of the lamp division in Osram group turnover was around two billion euros at the time of the separation. At the end of July 2016, Osram announced that Ledvance would be sold to a Chinese consortium for more than 400 million euros. The Chinese lighting manufacturer MLS and the Chinese financial investors Yiwu and IDG were each to become one third of the new owners. The deal was concluded with economic effect on March 1, 2017, and the final purchase price was around 500 million euros. IDG Capital was the majority owner within the consortium. MLS has been the sole owner of Ledvance since April 2018.
