Berlin Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was a passenger station in the center of Berlin from 1882 to 2002 .

history

On May 15, 1882 the Berlin Stadtbahn was opened, which crossed the city in an east-west direction as a four-track connection line for suburban and freight traffic. It should open up Charlottenburg , the Lehrter and the Silesian terminus as well as the city center . Directly at the northern end of the hall of the Lehrter train station , at a right angle to its tracks and elevated on a viaduct, the Lehrter city train station was built as a station for the light rail.

The increase in rail traffic at Lehrter Bahnhof made it necessary to convert the track systems. In the course of this work, the bridge construction under the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof, which spanned the tracks of the Lehrter Bahn at the end of the Lehrter Bahnhof, was extensively rebuilt in 1912 and 1929.

From December 1, 1930, with the conversion of the light rail operation to the S-Bahn , the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof also became an S-Bahn station.

After 1951, the S-Bahn station lost a lot of its importance, as there was no change to the old Lehrter station. On the Stadtbahn route, after the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 , the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof was the last station in the western part of Berlin to the east , the following station, Berlin Friedrichstrasse, was already in the Soviet sector . In addition, the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof lost much of its importance due to its location in the immediate vicinity of the Wall.

On January 9, 1984, when the S-Bahn West was handed over to the BVG, the station also became a border station for the railway companies. The administration by the BVG did not include the heavily secured railway facilities in the border area on GDR territory, so DR drivers from the eastern part took over the BVG trains for the onward journey to Friedrichstrasse station. This change in personnel always took place without any problems and was hardly noticed by the passengers.

The listed Lehrter Stadtbahnhof, largely preserved in its original state, was renovated in 1987 for the 750th anniversary of Berlin for around ten million marks (adjusted for inflation in today's currency: around 9,105,000 euros), but in the summer of 2002 as part of the construction work for the new Berliner Main station demolished.

Current situation

Inside the railways, today's Berlin Central Station consists of two stations:

  • Berlin Lehrter Bahnhof ( internal abbreviation : BL ) for tracks 1 to 8 in the tunnel and
  • Berlin Lehrter Stadtbahnhof (internal railway: BLS ) for tracks 11 to 14 on the Stadtbahn and BHBF for S-Bahn tracks 15-16.

The new S-Bahn station (internal train station: BHBF ), which is operationally a separate stop from the other railway systems, is located in the place of the old city station in the new main station , here you can still find the name Berlin Hauptbahnhof - Lehrter Bahnhof .
