The Leibniz Institute for Arteriosclerosis Research at the University of Münster e. V. (abbreviated LIFA ) was a research institute in Münster that as an institute of the Westphalian Wilhelms University was affiliated.

Scientific focus

The institute researched the development, prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis and promoted its prevention and therapy . Clinical cause research on patients was combined with interdisciplinary basic research; Aspects of epidemiological research and health care should also be further developed. The LIFA was an institute of the Leibniz Association (completely: Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz). The development of the PROCAM score goes back to LIFA , a point value score for calculating the cardiovascular risk on the basis of various biological values.

history

The institute was founded by Professor Gerd Assmann as a private institution. In 1999 the Science Council recommended acceptance into the federal-state funding, in 2005 it was accepted into the Leibniz Association. After Assmann retired, the content should be restructured. After a few years, however, the Leibniz Association saw no scientifically or organizationally acceptable development of the institute and refrained from continuing to operate the facility. In the course of the evaluations, the suspicion was also raised that, before 2010, state funding to the institute was not being used for the institute's activities, but for the "Assmann Foundation for Prevention". There was a public prosecutor's investigation into breach of trust against the former head of the institute and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia demanded repayments of 3.6 million euros.

The institute was closed on June 30, 2014.
