The Leichhardt Colliery (German: Leichhardt-Kohlenbergwerk ) is a former coal mine about 26 kilometers south of Blackwater in Queensland in Australia . A six meter thick coal seam was mined at a depth of 350 to 410 meters . The mine was named after Ludwig Leichhardt .
There are several coal mines in the Blackwater area. The Leichhardt coal mine was the first to mine in the Bowen Basin at a depth of more than 300 meters. The coal here contains 16 m³ of seam gas per ton, which is released by mining. This deposit , a complex geological body in which strong geomechanical forces act, has been the subject of scientific research since the 1960s . Because of the high gas pressure and the permeability of coal, there have been around 200 mining hazards since 1971. In December 1980, two miners of around 500 tons of coal were spilled in the southern part of the mine and lost their lives. The mine was last operated by BHP Billiton . It closed in 1982. The major problems in occupational safety and ventilation were decisive for this decision .
