The Leierschwanzwida or Leierschwanzweber ( Euplectes jacksoni ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of fire weavers ( Euplectes ).

features

The lyre-tailed wida is about 14 cm, with a tail in a magnificent dress about 30 cm tall and 40-49 g in weight, the female is a little lighter. The bird has a powerful light, conical beak, black eyes, and dark brown legs. The male is yellow-brown on the shoulder, in a magnificent dress black with yellow-brown striped wings, in flight the wings appear brown, the tail hangs down. In the plain dress , like the female, it is ocher-colored, with a light stripe above the eyes, yellowish-brown on the top and lightly dashed on the bottom.

distribution and habitat

This weaver can be found in higher grasslands and on grain fields of 1500–3000 m in Kenya and Tanzania .

nutrition

Lyra-tailed weavers feed on grass seeds, especially on grasses such as Themeda triandra, millet or insects .

Reproduction

The males perform dances in groups in courtship areas by jumping up on flat grassy areas. The breeding season is between December and January and between April and June, in Kenya between August and September and November, depending on the rainy seasons.
