Lelio Basso

Lelio Basso (born December 25, 1903 in Varazze , † December 16, 1978 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer, publicist and left-wing socialist politician.

Basso had become a member of the Italian Socialist Party as a student at the University of Pavia and was imprisoned twice during the time of Italian fascism . Between the internments he already worked as a lawyer in Milan .

After the Second World War , Basso was one of the most important figures on the left wing of the socialist party, and in 1963 he was expelled from the party. He then played a key role in founding the Partito Socialista Italiano di Unità Proletaria (PSIUP), which existed from 1964 to 1972.

As an expert in international law, Basso has served on Russell tribunals .
