Leo Huebner

Leo Huebner was a German basketball coach .

Life

Hübner played basketball before 1945, and according to the sources he learned the game in Latvia .

In 1952 he built the first basketball team in Halle (Saale) at the HSG “Geschwister Scholl” science , after this sport had previously been practiced partly within the volleyball section , but had remained unorganized until then. He trained teams at SC Wissenschaft Halle and SC Chemie Halle. His protégés in Halle also included Axel Straube and the later top referee Siegfried Käsebier , while Horst Neuhof , who worked in Magdeburg in particular , was also heavily influenced by Huebner when it came to basketball.

In 1953, in a coaching team with Anton Kartak , he looked after the German team formed from players from the GDR and the FRG, which took part in the European championship and took 14th place there. Huebner was later also the coach of the GDR national team and led them during the qualifying round for the 1960 Summer Olympics .

In the 1960s, Hübner, along with Gerhard Franke, Georg Brock, Gerhard Heinecke, Eberhard Herrmann and Theo Endert, was one of those coaches who introduced mini basketball with rules and conditions adapted to children in the German Democratic Republic .

Hübner was vice president of the GDR basketball association in the 1950s and 1960s.
