Leo Stefan Schmitt

Leo Stefan Schmitt (born July 8, 1952 in Großrosseln ) is a German politician ( SPD , Die Linke ).

Life and family

Schmitt grew up in Bous and completed his secondary school leaving certificate at the local humanistic grammar school . On October 1, 1970, he joined the Saarland police force, where he worked until his election to the state parliament.

Schmitt is married and has two daughters.

In 1972 Schmitt joined the SPD. There he was sub-district chairman of the Jusos and chairman of the local SPD association Bous .

From 1980 to 1999 Schmitt was a member of the Saarland state parliament . From 1985 to 1999 he held the office of domestic policy spokesman and from 1991 to 1999 the office of parliamentary director of the SPD parliamentary group. In addition, he was a member of the Saarlouis district council from 1985 to 1988 and was also a member of the municipal council of Bous for a while.

From 2000 to 2007 Schmitt was managing director of the SPD state parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament . In July 2007, after 35 years of membership, Schmitt declared his exit from the SPD and joined the Die Linke party.

In the meantime he is the parliamentary group manager of the parliamentary group Die Linke in the Bremen citizenship, but on July 1, 2011.
