Leo Szilard Lectureship Award

The Leo Szilard Lectureship Award is an annual science award given by the American Physical Society . It is named after the Hungarian-German-American physicist and molecular biologist Leó Szilárd . It was awarded for the first time in 1974, at that time still undoped and under the name Leo Szilard Award . With financial support from the Packard and MacArthur Foundations , among others, prize money has been awarded since 1998: initially $ 1,000 , as of 2017, is $ 3,000. In addition, the award winner receives financial support to hold lectures.

The award is given to people who have distinguished themselves in the application of scientific physical knowledge for the benefit of the general public, particularly in the areas of environmental protection , arms control and science policy . The award is shaped like a dolphin , referring to a short story by Szilárd called The Voice of the Dolphins .
