David Hafemeister

David Walter Hafemeister (born July 1, 1934 in Chicago ) is an American physicist and armaments expert.

Hafemeister studied mechanical engineering at Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in 1957 (after which he was a particle accelerator engineer at the Argonne National Laboratory in 1957/58 ) and physics at the University of Illinois with a master’s degree in 1960 and a doctorate in 1964. As a post- He was a PhD student at Los Alamos National Laboratory until 1966 . He was from 1966 Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University and from 1969 Associate Professor and from 1972 Professor of Physics at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo , where he was retired in 2000.

He is affiliated with the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University and advised the US Senate on the proliferation of nuclear weapons and weapons-grade material and the US State Department and the arms control agency. From 1975 to 1977 he was a science advisor to Senator John Glenn .

As a physicist, he dealt with solid-state physics (e.g. electronic structure of alkali halides) and nuclear physics, including using the Mössbauer effect . In addition to armament issues, he dealt with other socially relevant issues such as energy, acid rain and global warming.

In 1971 and 1980 he was a visiting scientist in Groningen, 1973 at the Argonne National Laboratory, 1983/84 at MIT and 1985/86 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory .

Numerous publications on questions of disarmament and arms control come from him.

In 1996 he received the Leo Szilard Lectureship Award . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society , the American Association for the Advancement of Science (of which he was a Congressional Fellow) and a member of the Federation of American Scientists . He was Study Director for Arms Control Issues for the National Academy of Sciences.
