Leon Stein
Leon Stein (born September 18, 1910 in Chicago , Illinois , † May 9, 2002 in Laguna Woods ) was an American Jewish composer.
The son of the Ukrainian emigrant Harry Uhnstahl , who took the name Silverstein and eventually Stein in the USA, was a student of the organist Robert Gomer Jones at Crane Junior College before he studied at DePaul University and privately with Leo Sowerby , Eric DeLamarter , Frederick Stock and Hans Lange studied.
He obtained a master’s degree from the university in 1935 and a doctorate in 1949. From the beginning of his studies in 1931 he also taught here - with a two-year break due to military service in World War II - until his retirement in 1978. He became professor of composition and music theory and was dean of the music faculty from 1966 to 1976.
Stein also worked as musical director of the Niles Township Jewish Congregation in Skokie (1956-66) and was conductor of the Community Symphony of Chicago (1945-65), the City Symphony of Chicago (1964-84) and the DePaul University Orchestra (1965- 77).
He composed more than 100 works, including two operas, four symphonies, five string quartets and other chamber music and solo works.
