Leonardus Achates

Leonardus Achates , actually Leonhard Agtstein , was a Swiss book printer who worked in Italy from around 1472 to 1491. He came from Basel and is therefore also known as Leonardus de Basilea .

Leonardus Achates was a pioneer of letterpress printing in Italy. In 1472 he printed the works of the Roman poet Virgil in Venice , in the same year his name appears in Vicenza . He worked here for a long time, but there are also prints from Padua (1473) and St. Urso (1474). Not all of his prints can be unequivocally attributed to him. The latest known print was dated December 23, 1491.
