Leonhard Beck

Leonhard Beck (* around 1480 in Augsburg ; † 1542 ibid) was a German painter, draftsman and wood cutter .

life and work

Son of Johann Georg Beck, of whom two Psalter manuscripts (around 1495) have been preserved. Beck became a student of Holbein and worked with him on the Dominican altar in Frankfurt from 1500. In 1503 he received the master's license in Augsburg. His woodcut work is extensive, comprising more than 300 sheets; these include illustrations in Theuerdank and Weißkunig . Own paintings are hardly secured and two frescoes secured by documents in the St. Moritz Church in Augsburg have not survived. One of the most famous works is St. George Fighting the Dragon , which is exhibited in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
