Leonhard's Church (Feldbach)
The parish church of St. Leonhard is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Feldbach in Styria.
history
The church, mentioned in a document in 1188, was named as a church in the vicariate of Riegersburg in 1232 and elevated to a parish church in 1387. The church was built from 1898 to 1900 according to the plans of the architect Johann Pascher as a new building in the Renaissance style with the inclusion of the three-bay nave of the older church from the 14th century. It stands in the place of a previous Gothic building, of which only the part that is used as a war memorial is left.
Building description
Main house of the neo-renaissance
The wide six-bay nave with side chapels has a square indented choir in the west. A southern low late Gothic chapel and the eastern Gothic choir were demolished, while the Gothic nave was integrated as an extension. Outside there are well-preserved stone epitaphs for W. Zwickhl (1582) and M. Steinhaisl (1581).
Gothic nave as a war memorial
To the north is a three-bay nave with a ribbed vault on pillars with a gallery. It is the Gothic church from the 14th century, which was redesigned as a war memorial after severe war damage in 1945. To the north of it, the basement of the former church tower with the year 1688 is still preserved, the upper part of the tower was destroyed in 1945. The crucifixion group with three figures in the chancel was made by the South Tyrolean sculptor Veit Königer . It is from the 18th century.
Concrete bell tower
From 1961 to 1964 a free-standing bell tower with a total height of 72 m was built according to the plans of the architect Eberhard Jäger from Graz. The concrete structure is from Suppan, the steel crown from Puntigam.
The striking painting with over 2000 color fields was created with the dean Johann Leopold at the time under the motto Many colors, one tower - many people, one parish! Executed with 20 young people from the parish in 1987. The work of art was executed according to the design " Image of Democracy" by and under the guidance of the Graz painter Gustav Troger .
Church laboratory
Around the choir of the church there are still remains of the old tabor of the city from the 15th and 16th centuries (inscription with 1474). The former Tabor enclosed the church with a moat, with high loopholes and with internal two- to three-storey storage buildings (gaden) with battlements. The Tabor was partially demolished in 1878. The remainder is used today as a local museum and a fishing museum.
organ
The organ was built in 2012 by the organ building company Mathis (Switzerland). The instrument is located in a housing approx. 11 m wide, 10 m high and up to 3 m deep. It has 46 registers (3,597 pipes ) and three effect registers on three manuals and pedal . The effect tab "Weingartmann" is a wind chime that, Friedrich Weingartmann after the parish priest of the community , was named. The playing and stop actions are mechanical, the stop actions are also electrical.
