Leonz Held (born February 11, 1844 in Zizers ; † February 5, 1925 in Bern , Catholic , resident in Zizers) was a Swiss topographer , cartographer and geodetician .

Life

Leonz Held was born on February 11, 1844 in Zizers as the son of the doctor and music teacher Johann Anton Held and Elisabeth, born Vogel. Held, who spent his youth in Chur , trained as a geometer.

As a result, Held worked for the Federal Topographical Bureau from 1872 . Employed as the first topographer since 1886, Held worked as a successful mountain topographer until 1901. In 1902 Leonz Held was appointed head of the Federal Topographical Bureau, and between 1903 and 1920 he was director of the new department for topography.

During Leonz Held's term of office, a new precision leveling system was used in Switzerland, the six-fold cylinder projection that was true to the angle was introduced and the federal land registry survey was prepared.

In addition, Held was a member of the Swiss Glacier Commission and the Geodetic Commission. He also served in the Swiss Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel .

He was married to Anna Maria Barbara, the daughter of Sebastian Laurenz Locher. Leonz Held died on February 5, 1925, a few days before he would have turned 81 in Bern. He was the father-in-law of the lawyer and liberal politician Hans Pfister .
