Leopoldo J. Niilus

Leopoldo Juan Niilus (born January 19, 1930 in Tallinn , Estonia , † February 9, 2015 in Geneva , Switzerland ) was an Argentine lawyer , director of a department of the World Council of Churches , general secretary of the United Lutheran Church of Argentina and author .

Life

Niilus comes from a Protestant family. His father was Jaan Eduard Niilus and his mother Meta nee Kiris. He discovered his interest in legal issues while attending elementary and high school . After the emigration to Argentina, he studied at the National University of Buenos Aires Law .

In the late 1960s he was appointed director of the Churches' Commission on International Affairs (CCIA) of the World Council of Churches (WCC / WCC). Under his leadership, there was a restructuring so that the member churches of the South gained greater influence in the WCC. In the early 1970s he played an important role in negotiating a peace treaty in Sudan .

Leopoldo J. Niilus was most recently General Secretary of the Movement for Church and Society in Latin America (ISAL) and has now initiated a series of profound changes. The headquarters of the CCIA have been moved from New York to Geneva to be closer to the newly designed WCC . A new commission, representative of all regions for the first time, was formed.

Niilus took part in the work of the Christian Peace Conference (CFK), at the III. All-Christian Peace Assembly (ACFV) he took part in 1968 in Prague . He was elected to the committee to continue their work. He sent the V. ACFV a message of greetings as CCIA General Secretary.

An Ecumenical Action for Peace and Justice, Armored Life , traveled to Geneva in May 1980 with a request for support from the WCC. They went public with a pacifist appeal, which contained the self-commitment “I am ready to live without the protection of military armor.” After talking to representatives of the CCIA Leopoldo Niilus and Ninan Koshy , their request was rejected.

In 1979, Ninan Koshy, an Indian layman , followed the then director Leopoldo Niilus in his office. He headed the CCIA until 1991.

Niilus also performed with David McDuff as a translator a . a. of a poem "Christmas Greetings 1941".

Niilus was married to Malle Reet Veerus de Niilus and has one daughter.
