The Leopold Park is a 3.2 hectare large park in Munich district of Schwabing .

The park is located between Friedrichstrasse and west of Leopoldstrasse at the level of the Giselastrasse underground station .

history

The Leopoldpark was originally added to his palace by Prince Leopold and used as a military area. After the Second World War , it was designated as an expansion area for the Ludwig Maximilians University as a special university area in the urban development plan. The university kindergarten was built in the middle of the complex under the old trees.

After public protests to preserve the park, the university only built the eastern part with the student union, cafeteria and the building for the pedagogical and psychological faculty ("Schweinchenbau"). There were further protests when the Archbishop's Ordinariate wanted to build an extension for their seminary in the southern part of the park, even though the existing rooms were far from being fully occupied. Initially, the building application provided for five structures that would have completely built over the southern park. After further protests, demonstrations and a press campaign by Aktion Maxvorstadt with the participation of artists such as Ali Mitgutsch and the architect Karl Klühspies , the church reduced its claim to an office building directly on Leopoldstraße and left the trees in the background. This part was opened to the public in May 1979, and benches could be procured from donations from citizens.

However, the lack of demand for the rooms was evident from the fact that the office building was never used as such by the church, but was rented out commercially immediately after completion and sold after a few years. The premises of the cath. University community at the LMU are in the building.

The park

The remaining area is 3.2 hectares; it is limited to the north and east by the university buildings and the office building, which shield the park from the traffic on Leopoldstrasse. Several openings in the historic fence open to Friedrichstrasse. The park is characterized by deciduous trees, there is also a large lawn area by the cafeteria. There is a playground under the trees next to the university kindergarten. The paths are narrow and curved.

In the park there is a monument to the painter Anton Ažbe in the form of a bust.
