Special events

Elderly part of the prison

According to the Council of Europe , this prison is the worst prison in France. Álvaro Gil-Robles , former Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, complained during his visit in September 2005 about the catastrophic hygienic conditions in the completely overcrowded prison. Detainees vomit and urinate in the cells without being cleaned. Often up to four inmates are housed in a seven square meter cell, and many of the inmates have to sleep on the bare floor. Álvaro Gil-Robles said he saw inmates mutilate themselves with razor blades and smear blood on walls.

This is a repulsive place. With the exception of Moldova, I have never before experienced more appalling detention conditions. Under these conditions, people come out worse than they came in. "

- Quote from Alvaro Gil-Robles

At regular intervals, detainees who have injuries that appear to be the result of police violence are brought to the prison infirmary. The prisoners are only separated according to gender. As a result, it is quite possible that a petty criminal is incarcerated in the same cell as a violent criminal. For the sake of the deterrent effect, prominent criminals are also assigned to Les Baumettes.

The fourth from last (Ali Benyanès, 1973), third from last ( Christian Ranucci , 1976) and last ( Hamida Djandoubi , 1977) execution took place in Les Baumettes in France.

Following an outrageous report by the General Inspector for Prison Institutions ( Contrôleur général des lieux de privation de liberté ) Jean-Marie Delarue on December 6, 2012, the human rights organization for prisoners, the Observatoire international des prisons (OIP), tried before the Conseil d'État and the Administrative Court Several complaints filed in Marseille that immediate measures should be taken in the Marseille prison. Judgments were made that, within a short period of time, all cells could be ventilated, received electric light, the risk of injury and the many rats, cockroaches and woodlice in the premises should be eliminated - measures that had been delayed for twenty years. Representatives of the OIP expressed themselves in the sense that after this result sought and achieved through legal dispute, the apparently feasible legal action would be sought more often. The prison authority has taken urgent action.

Les Baumettes in the film

In November 2012, the black and white film "Être là" by the French documentary filmmaker Régis Sauder came out, in which he shows the grueling work of the exclusively female staff - nurses, physiotherapists, psychiatric nurses - in the prison infirmary. The film was shot by Sauder himself within three weeks, only assisted by an employee who made the sound recordings.

A scene from the movie Catch Me If You Can was filmed in Les Baumettes .

New building project

From 2013 to 2016, the new building Les Baumettes 2 was built in place of the women's prison. It offers 600 places for men and 174 for women as well as a sanitary area of 3000 m 2 and a new main entrance for the entire prison. From 2018 to 2021, the plan is to demolish the remaining old buildings and replace them with the new Les Baumettes 3 building.
