from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Les Maîtres Musiciens de la Renaissance Française is a series edited by Henry Expert (1863–1952) with works by important composers of the French Renaissance in modern notation and with critical comments. 23 volumes in the series have been published. It is considered a monumental publication with which the editor laid the foundations for the edition of musical sources from the 16th century and advanced music research in the 19th century. According to the Riemann Music Lexicon , it is the first significant publication on monuments of French polyphony.

The first volume published with works by Orlando di Lasso contains a programmatic foreword with explanations of his scientific method.

A continuation under the title Monuments de la musique francaise au temps de la Renaissance did not appear in ten volumes until 1924–29; an eleventh volume followed in 1960.
