Les Tambours du Bronx are a sixteen-piece French percussion ensemble that was founded in 1987 in Nevers . It is characteristic of the music of the "Drummers from the Bronx" that they drum with ax handles on 225 liter oil barrels.

history

The Tambours du Bronx were founded in 1987 in Varennes-Vauzelles , a municipality neighboring Nevers in the Nièvre department . Its name is derived from a district in Varennes-Vauzelles, which is nicknamed "Le Bronx" due to the straight street grid and the identical gray and dreary rows of houses. This quarter is mostly inhabited by the steel workers from the local SNCF plant , and this is where the group's first barrels come from.

Since 1990 they have appeared in concerts in many European countries, the USA and Djibouti. You were guests at the following festivals: Roskilde , Woodstage Summer Open Air , Sziget , Wacken Open Air and the Braunschweig Classix Festival.

Appearances

The oil drums, selected for their sound and "softness" and used since the beginning, have a capacity of 225 liters. Newly delivered barrels are painted or sprayed by the group. One barrel per musician is played for two concerts and given away to the audience after the second concert.

The associated mallets are made of beech wood, with a length of 40 cm and a diameter of 3 cm. A musician breaks roughly two pairs per concert. In the early days of the TDB, disused hoe handles were used, now the mallets are delivered in pallets.

Electronic sounds, triggered, among other things, by the metal pipes hitting the stands, completed the sound since the mid-1990s. Before that, the concerts were performed purely acoustically by a stage cast of up to 25 people. The current set list always includes a few purely acoustic "barrel pieces". It happens occasionally that the group only plays acoustically for 20 minutes, in contrast to the whole setlist, which exceeds an hour and a half.

On the album STEREOSTRESS REMIXES, released in 2003, the group experimented with other musical styles, but never without disregarding their industrial roots (changed soundscape and the melodies of the various instruments). Since then, an additional musician, a DJ, has dedicated himself to the electronic samples and sounds on stage.
