Lessico Etimologico Italiano

The Lessico Etimologico Italiano ( LEI for short ) is an etymological dictionary of Italian that has been published by the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz since 1979 . According to its own statements, the responsible commission has set itself the task of “putting the vocabulary of Italoromania in a Romanesque context”. Every word is researched on the basis of its linguistic roots, taking into account linguistic, geographical and sociocultural contexts. It also takes into account dialect vocabulary.

The LEI project managers are Elton Prifti and Wolfgang Schweickard , and Max Pfister until his death in 2017 . There are currently four full-time employees. Since 2015, four new LEI jobs have been created at the Universities of Mannheim (2015), Vienna (2019) and Siena (2019).

The LEI has been published in the Dr. Ludwig Reichert Verlag Wiesbaden , around six fascicles are published annually. So far 17 volumes have been published in full. With the fascicle E6 (2020) the lexicon extends to the lemma * EXCAMBIARE .
