Wolfgang Schweickard

Wolfgang Schweickard (born October 16, 1954 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German linguist ( Romance studies ).

Wolfgang Schweickard studied Romance studies and received his doctorate in 1985 from the University of Mainz . In 1990 his habilitation followed at the University of Trier . From 1990–93 he was a full professor for Romance translation studies at Saarland University , and from 1992–93 he was chairman of the linguistic and literary studies department and a member of the Senate of Saarland University. In 1993 he was appointed professor for Romance linguistics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. There he was founding director of the Institute for Romance Studies from 1993–95, member of the Senate from 1995–99, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy from 1996–97 and Vice Rector from 1997–99. In September 2001 he accepted a professorship for Romance Philology at Saarland University, succeeding Max Pfister .

Schweickard has been a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz since 2004, a member of the Italian National Academy , the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , since 2011 , and a member of the Accademia della Crusca since 2013 . In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bari .

Schweickard's work focuses on historical Romance studies, lexicology and lexicography. He is co-editor of the magazine for Romance philology and the yearbook Lexicographica . Current projects are the Deonomasticon Italicum (DI), the Lessico Etimologico Italiano (LEI) (together with Max Pfister and Elton Prifti) and the Dictionnaire Étymologique Roman (DÉRom) (together with Eva Buchi).
