Lessing tunnel

West side of the Lessing tunnel before the renovation

The so-called Lessingtunnel in Hamburg is an approx. 110 meter long railway underpass at the western end of Julius-Leber-Strasse that runs north in front of the Hamburg-Altona train station . The name followed the street name "Lessingstraße" that was used when the facility was built in 1908.

The tunnel system results from the course of Julius-Leber-Straße, which is about five meters lower at this point, and the S-Bahn and long-distance railway tracks with associated platforms and the side supporting walls for this bridge, which are close together in north-south direction .

On the western side, the four tracks of the Hamburg S-Bahn will be driven under before their entrance to the Altona underground station, in the middle and on the eastern side the eight tracks and four platforms of the long-distance train station Altona in the upper position.

The pedestrian and cycle paths including two rows of support pillars in the middle ran within the "tunnel" system, and the motor vehicle lanes on the sides; this is to be changed with the renovation that has been pending and ongoing since 2016.

The transverse Barnerstrasse and Scheel-Plessen-Strasse meet in front of the western “tunnel mouth”, while Harkortstrasse and President-Krahn-Strasse merge at the eastern end.

An average of 23,000 vehicles pass through the tunnel every day. It is therefore an important east-west connection in the Altona district, especially since the Altona train station with the bus terminal in front of it and the extensive tracks and former railway facilities in the north would otherwise have to be bypassed extensively.

Redevelopment

The tunnel has been renovated for 25 million euros since 2016 and was therefore closed to car traffic from August 1, 2016 to the end of October 2017, and to pedestrians and cyclists in July and August 2017. It was then passable again, but has been fully closed again since May 2019. From June 2019 the S-Bahn bridges will be demolished and replaced with new ones. For this, the S-Bahn traffic from June 27 to August 8, 2019 from Altona to Othmarschen , Holstenstraße and Diebsteich will be interrupted, the trains will be replaced by buses. The direct connection Diebsteich – Holstenstraße is not affected.

During the renovation, the road in the western section of the tunnel with the branching in it is to be widened, the ceiling raised and the pedestrian and cycle paths relocated to the side. The eastern section will not be rehabilitated.

After the relocation of the Altona long-distance station to Diebsteich, which is planned until 2024, the tunnel is to be closed again for a shortening - then the eastern part with the bridges of the long-distance railway tracks and platforms is to be demolished. Due to lawsuits against the relocation of the station, this date is uncertain.

reception

The Lessingtunnel can be seen in the original opening credits to the TV series Großstadtrevier .

The tunnel is notorious because of the pollution and the gloomy ambience and was also known as the "dirty crossing".
