Letsie II.
Letsie II. [ Leˈt͡siɪ ] (* around 1869 , † 1913 ; also Letsie Lerotholi ; occasionally Letsienyana, German "Little Letsie") was head ( Sesotho morena e moholo , English Paramount Chief ) of the Basotho people in Basutoland from 1905 to 1913 , today Lesotho .
Life
Letsie II was the first-born son of the second wife of the morena e moholo Lerotholi . He grew up in his father's village, Likhoele near Matsieng . With his father he successfully fought against his uncle Masopha in 1898.
Lerotholi died on August 9, 1905. Letsie II was the first morena e moholo to be appointed by the British High Commissioner . He founded the village of Phahameng between Likhoele and Morija , where he resided from then on. Letsie II spoke out against the integration of Basutoland into the South African Union founded in 1910 . Letsie II was one of the leaders in the founding of the South African National Council , the forerunner of the African National Congress . He died in 1913.
Letsie II had a long relationship with 'Mamojela, a widowed concubine of his grandfather Letsie I. The only male descendant of a marriage was the son Tau, who died shortly after Letsies II's death in an unexplained manner. Letsie's successor was his brother Griffith Lerotholi .
