Breeding history
The origins of the Latvian draft horse can be traced back to the time of the Teutonic Knight Order (12th to 15th centuries). Oldenburg horses were then crossbred in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 1930s, Swedish Ardennes were also crossed for breeding. Overall, the breeding history is similar to that of the neighboring Lithuanian draft horses . With the motorization, the breed almost disappeared, in 2006 there were 196 Latvian cold-blooded horses in Latvia.
