The lighthouse Arkona Island or lighthouse Xiaoqingdao ( Chinese 小青島燈塔 / 小青岛灯塔 , Pinyin Xiǎoqīngdǎo Dēngtǎ ) is a beacon on the coastal island Arkona (also Arcona , Chinese 小青島 / 小青岛 , Pinyin Xiǎoqīngdǎo ) in the Chinese port city of Qingdao .
history
The lighthouse was built during the German colonial era in 1904 and showed ships to enter the port of Tsingtau , the main and port of the German colony of Kiautschou at that time . During the siege of Tsingtau it was damaged shortly before the German occupation forces surrendered. After the Japanese occupation it was repaired and put back into use. Together with the island, the lighthouse was renamed Chinese after Qingdao was returned to China.
The lighthouse is still in operation today. As one of the preserved German buildings and a well-known landmark of the city of Qingdao, it was added to the list of national cultural monuments of the People's Republic of China in 2006.
