history

The center of Paspels used to be to the west of today's village by the Alt-Süns castle . It can therefore be assumed that the place where the castle stands today was already built over.

However, there is evidence that the castle was rebuilt around 1695 by Johann Viktor Travers von Ortenstein (1646–1725), presumably over a previous building. Parts of the main wing presumably still come from the time of construction, but they are no longer recognizable as such. The outside staircase with railing on the south side was built around 1710.

In 1730 the castle was completely rebuilt by the builder's son of the same name. The stairwell and paneling room with rainbow paintings date from this period . This conversion is probably still based on the overall layout of the system, as it is today. The portraits of the von Salis-Soglio family were painted by Angelika Kauffmann in 1757 . Lieutenant General Victor von Travers carried out further modifications and had the chapel, consecrated on April 25, 1760, built in.

The last major renovation took place in 1892/93 under Colonel Friedrich von Tscharner with a redesign of the exterior. At that time, sgraffito decorations , the carved roof in Swiss wood style and the polygonal tower with hood and lantern on the west side were created. The architect was Nicolaus Hartmann sen. from St. Moritz.

In 1911 the castle passed to Minister Ferdinand von Salis-Soglio. Today it is privately owned and operated as a hotel. It is one of the "Swiss Historic Hotels". The exterior was restored in 2002.

In the south of the complex there is a spacious garden with a baroque part, a water lily pond and a pavilion on the edge of the site.

Hotel operations at Schloss Paspels will be closed at the end of August 2012. The marketing organizations Switzerland Tourism and Swiss Historic Hotels had requested a star rating, which the owner family did not want to provide. The building will be used privately in the future. Switzerland will lose one of the two historic castle hotels. The second is Wartegg Castle in the canton of St. Gallen.
